Noida, Greater Noida new hubs of mobile manufacturing: Ravi Shankar Prasad

The National Capital Region has become the preferred location for mobile manufacturing companies as at least five units have come up in Noida, Greater Noida in the last two years, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today. 

Speaking at the launch of manufacturing facility of LeEco mobile phones in Greater Noida, Prasad said 38 manufacturing units have come up in the country in the last 2 years, 5-6 of which are in Noida and Greater Noida.

“Noida and Greater Noida are becoming a new hub of mobile manufacturing in the last few years. 5-6 manufacturing units have come up in the region alone, which is maximum in the country.”

He said that the manufacturing units across the country have created nearly 40,000 direct jobs and 1.25 lakh indirect jobs. 

Highlighting that the policies of the Narendra Modi-led government have led to phone companies preferring India for manufacturing, Electronics & Information Technology minister said that the government is eyeing a target of manufacturing of 500 million unites of phones in India by 2020. 

“We want a digital empowered country. The Prime Minister wants governance to be available on the mobile devices,” he said. 

He had said at an event yesterday that 11 crore mobile phones have been made in the country in last one year compared to 6 crore earlier.

He said that government has provided Rs 10,000 crore under Electronics Development Fund to support new entrepreneurs in the field of electronics.

Chinese companies like Gionee and Xiaomi are making their handsets at Foxconnplant in Andhra Pradesh. Domestic companies such as Karbonn, Lava, Micromax,Intex, Jivi, iTel, and MTech too have set up their manufacturing plants in the country.
