New Delhi: Karl Slym (born February 9, 1962 in Derby) was an English businessman and the managing director of Tata Motors from October 2012 until his death in 2014. Slym died on January 26 after falling from a high floor of a hotel in Bangkok.

Slym was leading the automaker's operations in India and international markets including South Korea, Thailand and South Africa, excluding the Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) luxury unit that it acquired in 2008.

Slym joined Tata Motors in 2012 and was given the task of reviving flagging sales and market share in the domestic business of Tata Motors.

Before joining Tata Motors, Slym was the Executive Vice President & Board Member, SGMW Motors, China (a General Motors Joint Venture), prior to which he was President, Managing Director and Board Member of General Motors in India.

For nearly two decades, Slym has been with Toyota and General Motors in various positions across geographies. Slym is an alumnus of Stanford University and a Sloan Fellow.
