Bollywood films have many times faced controversies in the past. Some movies fell a prey to religious groups while there were other projects which faced trouble because of its bold content. Lately, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmavati is facing backlash before its release. As the film is set to hit the screens on December 1, here’s the list of the Bollywood movies that sparked major controversies even before they hit the silver screens.

PK

The film reflected the superstitious practices by every religion. Thus, the makers along with the lead actor Aamir Khan had to face the wrath of religious groups before its release. The fate of the film is not hidden from anyone. PK became one of the highest grossers of the year and was well received in China as well.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

The film featured Pakistani actor Fawad Khan along with Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. In the wake of Uri attack, Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India took the decision not to release any film featuring Pakistani actor. Thus, Karan Johar’s movie was in trouble. The ace director finally released a video requesting for the smooth release of the film.

Udta Punjab

The movie was about the use of drugs in Punjab. Central board had objections with many scenes of the film. Later, Bombay HC passed it with just one cut. Sadly, Udta Punjab was leaked before its release.

Padmavati

The film is mired in controversy from quite some time. Some of the religious groups are protesting against the movie stating that it has distorted the historical facts. However, the director has clarified that he has made the film with honesty and it will not harm the religious sentiments.
