New Delhi: Krishna Janmashtami or Lord Krishna's birthday is just a few days away i.e. on September 5. While the devotees are already thronging the markets to buy ‘prasad', ‘chandi ka jhula' or ‘vastra' for Govinda, they are equally geared up for the Dahi Handi celebration.
In his young age, Krishna also known as Kanha, used to form human pyramids along with his friends to steal butter from neighbourhood homes. This was one of his antics in human form.
Nowadays, people form huge human pyramids of a similar nature to break an earthen pot in order to celebrate the Lord's childhood notoriety. This pot is usually filled with curd or butter and hence the name – Dahi (meaning curd) and Handi (meaning pot).
As shown in the picture, they place the earthen pot at a considerable height in the open and then men from the community climb upon each other to reach the earthen pot and spill the butter and milk from it onto the rest.
The one who touches the earthen pot breaks it with a sharp object and spills the contents over the rest. Dahi Handi is mostly celebrated in Maharashtra, where it is extremely popular.
In order to continue the festivity, people sing songs and groove on some popular numbers along with a gala feast.
Here, we share a few such songs from Bollywood movies that you can use to dance and enjoy the festival.
