New Delhi: This Friday will see the release of director Madhur Bhandarkar's much talked about movie ‘Calendar Girls'. Just like other movies by Bhandarkar, this movie traces the darkness behind the shimmering world of modelling. Filled with emotions like love, hate, betrayal, jealousy and ambition, this movie has been in the news for all the reasons which might make it successful.
Unlike other flicks by Madhur Bhandarkar, this movie doesn't feature any known faces. It is a bold step by him to narrate a story with newcomers. Talking about the newbies, this film will surely mark a decisive turn in their careers. It might just make them the superstars every struggling actor aspires to be.
Before you head to theatres to see the movie, we thought it would be good if you knew all about these girls.
Hailing from Jaipur, this beauty was the runner up in the Femina Miss India contest in the year 2011. This gorgeous face is not restricted to the catwalks. She made it to the news when she became the first-ever winner of the Miss Universal Peace and Humanity in Lebanon. Madhur Bhandarkar was impressed by her acting skills in a Canadian documentary titled ‘The World Before Her'. Ruhi has a penchant for travelling and singing. She has admitted that if not an actor/model, she would have become an international pop singer.
Kyra is not entirely an unknown face. Her pretty face has graced advertisements of brands like ThumsUp and HCL laptop. The model, who is debuting with ‘Calendar Girls', has an Ekta Kapoor movie under her kitty too. In fact, in what can be seen as a trendsetting action, she is the first actress to sign a nudity clause with Kapoor. Her next movie, ‘XXX', is helmed by Ken Ghosh and is reportedly filled with erotic sequences.
A Gujarati girl, Avani is a well known face in the South Indian film industry. Her debut Tamil movie Naan Rajavaga Pogirein in the year 2013 won a lot of applause from the critics and audiences. This young girl made her presence felt in the international arena when a short film, Gulabee, in which she acted went on to win the Best Film award at the Canada International Film Festival in Vancouver and the New York Indian International Film Festival.
Akanksha comes from a background which is nowhere close to the film industry. Her father is a retired assistant commissioner and her mother, an astrologer. This, however, did not stop Puri from pursuing her dreams. In what sounds like a perfect story for a Bollywood flick, Akanksha started her career as an air hostess before diving into modelling. ‘Calendar Girls' isn't the first time she will be seen on screen. The Indore born girl made her acting debut with Suraj's Tamil action-masala film Alex Pandian.
With Satarupa, Bhandarkar has managed to bring a Bong connection to his movie. Pyne, who seems confident that the movie will open more doors for her in Bollywood, said in a recent interview, “I've been living in Mumbai for two years and have established myself as a model. I had no experience in acting when I auditioned for this film but I knew that I could act. Fate helped me land a role in this film.” An established model who has participated in a number of beauty pageants including Femina Miss India (2010), her colleagues describe her as an emotional, beautiful Bengali girl with ample brains.
