"Wimpy" kids are back for "Dog Days"

New York, Aug 2: The young stars of the "Wimpy Kid" franchise return for the third installment in the popular teen series: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days."

This time around bully/big brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) and his sarcastic sibling Greg (Zachary Gordon) are both vying for the attention of their summer crushes - Heather and Holly Hills.

"Every character from the old 'Wimpy Kid' movies is back," explains Gordon. "There is a new character, Heather Hills, yeah Holly Hill's older sister. The funny thing is you know how Greg has a crush on Hilly Hills, well Roderick has a major crush on Heather Hills. So it's sort of like a brother thing. And it's sort of funny because they both sort of brush him off. Holly is sort of taking a liking to Greg, but Heather, she sort of wants nothing to do with Roderick."

Greg and his hapless pal Rowley (Robert Capron) are ready for a relaxing summer break, but their vacation doesn't go quite as smoothly as planned.

"All Greg wants to do is play video games, sit inside, eat chips, that kind of thing. But his dad's like 'I want you to join Boy Scouts. I want you to go fishing,' that kind of thing. He wants him to be more like manly and Greg doesn't want to do that. So what he ends up doing is he creates a fake job for himself at a country club and then from there he just gets into a whole lot of trouble," said Capron.

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" is based on the series of seven books by Jeff Kinney about a kid who survives the awkward moments of middle school life. The books and films are told from the perspective of Greg, a self-centered tween whose angst over growing up - and dealing with bullies, girls and sibling rivalry among other things - is conveyed in funny stories and simple sketches.

"Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days" opens in U.S. theaters on August 3.
