Four militants were gunned down on Monday morning by security forces in a failed infiltration bid in Jammu and Kashmir’s Keran sector.

“Four militants killed during an infiltration bid in Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir,” said Army this morning. It has been learned that an operation is underway.

This comes a day after violence marred the bypoll to the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, in which eight protestors were killed and over 150 civilians and security personnel were left injured.

Stone-pelting was reported from over two dozen places across the three districts of Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal which constitute the Srinagar constituency.

The Election Commission pegged the voter turnout at 6.5 per cent – an all-time low in the militancy torn region since the late 90s. The government has often attributed the violence to incitement by outsiders sponsored by Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the government is making all out efforts to ensure that families of troops killed in the line of duty are provided a compensation of not less than Rs one crore, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had said.

Earlier on Sunday, militants fired upon a police station in south Kashmir's Kulgam district but fled after the cops retaliated.
