The Indian Army on Monday foiled an infiltration bid by Pakistan's Border Action Team (BAT) in the Keran sector of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to reports, 7-8 armed intruders attempted to cross over the border at around 1 pm and targeted the forward Indian posts in the sector. On noticing this, the Indian personnel retaliated in the same calibre, foiling the infiltration attempt and forcing the intruders to retreat.

The BAT's militants were supported by mortal shelling and firing of small arms from nearby Pakistan posts.

There are no reports of any casualties but firing is still on.

Earlier in the morning, a terrorist was killed as Army foiled an infiltration bid along the Line of Control in Uri sector of Baramulla district.

Yesterday, Army had busted a terrorist hideout in Kupwara and seized huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosive materials.

The infiltration attempt by BAT comes a day after Indian Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat said that surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the LoC could be repeated, if necessary, seeking to send a stern message to Pakistan.

BAT militants are mainly tasked to carry out disruptive activities in the form of secret raids across the Line of Control. It is said that terrorists accompany the trained soldiers of the unit on specific missions.

The Pakistan Army’s elite Special Services Group forms the core of BAT. Its primary task is to dominate the LoC by lunching deadly attacks. Special Services Group commandos are also among the best trained and are also called Black Storks due to the unique headgear they wear. Such teams can have anywhere between four to 10 people.

BAT also includes commandos of Pakistani Army and terrorists who are experts in guerrilla tactics and work along with Special Service Group. Terrorists are recruited in BAT so that Pakistan can disown them easily if caught.
