Two days after the gruesome gangrape of mother and daughter by a group of bandits shook the conscience of entire country, a reality check conducted by India TV in the wee hours showed just why the law and order situation in the state has been a subject of severe criticism and ridicule.

A check on the police presence in the area where two Noida women were allegedly raped showed the police patrol team barely 2 km from the crime scene less than 48 hours since the incident saw on-duty policemen sleeping. The scene was no different at the nearby police station, which also had cops in deep sleep.

The India TV reporter found the entire team in deep slumber at NH-91 near BulandShahr district. A reporter speaking to the camera and lights did not disturb them enough to pull them out of their deep sleep. It was only after we approached them that they woke up and came out of their vehicle.

Despite being caught on camera, the police constables refused to admit that they were sleeping. One of the constables said that they were on vigil, and that they just 'sat down' moments ago.

India TV's team further went to a nearby police station, where it again found the police constables, who were supposed to be on duty, sleeping; even the camera flash was not enough to wake them up.

Till now, seven police officials have been suspended on the charges of dereliction of duty. The officials suspended include SSP Bulandshahr Vaibhav Kishan, SP city Rammohan Singh, circle officer (Sadar) Himanshu Gaurav and SHO Ramsen Singh of Kotwali Dehat, amid allegations of laxity by police.

The Uttar Pradesh Police is facing widespread criticism for having failed to respond to the emergency calls made by the victims’ family during the three-hour ordeal on Saturday morning.

Three of the those held belong to the Bawariya gang have and been identified by the victims. All the culprits are to be booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA), police said.

As the incident, which occurred near bypass when the family from Noida was from travelling to Shahjahanpur on NH-91, acquired a political hue, the Chief Minister went into a fire-fighting mode and suspended SSP Bulandshahr Vaibhav Kishan, SP city Rammohan Singh , Circle Officer (Sadar) Himanshu Gaurav and SHO Ramsen Singh of Kotwali Dehat, amid allegations of laxity by police.
