A 35-year-old software engineer has been arrested by the Hinjewadi police for allegedly uploading the cellphone number of his wife on a website which offered escort services.
According to a Times of India report, the suspect, who hails from Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, is a resident of Sus Road and works in a company based in Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park. He committed the crime to harass his 33-year-old wife.
On July 22, the woman, who also works in a software company, filed a complaint with the Hinjewadi police station against unknown persons for uploading her cellphone number and other details on a website, after which she began receiving indecent calls from unknown numbers.
The case was registered under the provisions of Information technology (IT) Act and sections of cheating under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Police started searching the internet protocol (IP) address of the system or device, which was used to upload the woman’s details on the website.
“A few days later, we received the IP address of the device. We visited the location where the IP address was registered and found that it was the same residential address provided by the victim as her address in the complaint. We later got to know that the information was uploaded from a tablet which was owned by her husband,” Times of India quoted Arun Waykar, senior police inspector of Hinjewadi police station, as saying.
During the interrogation, the 35-year-old techie told the police that he had uploaded his wife’s cellphone number on the escort service website to trouble her.
“He told us that his wife often used to pick fights with him which frustrated him. He wanted to teach her a lesson and, therefore, uploaded her details on the website two months ago. The couple got married three years ago,” said Waykar.
