New Delhi: The death toll in Assam floods triggered by incessant rainfall rose to 14 with two more deaths reported from Sivasagar, officials said on Thursday.

The flood situation continued to be critical in the state. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority more than 14 lakh people are affected by the current wave of floods across 20 districts.

The 16 worst flood-affected districts are Dhemaji, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Morigaon, Nagaon, Kamrup, Dhubri, Kokrajhar and Karbi Anglong.

In the wake of water-borne diseases, state government is rushing medical teams to the worst-affected Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had on Wednesday made an aerial survey of the flood-hit Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Jorhat district.

Gogoi announced that the state government would constitute a Flood and Erosion Protection Authority on its own with an Rs 1,000 crore fund to strengthen the existing embankments and build new ones.
