#DUadmissions: Provisions for the transgenders
New Delhi: Till last year, Delhi University (DU) allowed the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queers (LGBTQs) to take admission only in Post Graduate Programmes. The University introduced the third Gender option in the OBC section of the PG form.
However, for the term 2015-16, DU has opened its doors to the third gender in the Undergraduate programmes as well. This time, the University has kept an option of ‘other gender' in its admission form.
This will allow the LGBTQ community to enrol themselves easily for the course of their liking.
Apart from this, the university also has plans to help transgenders accommodate in the colleges. DU's Cluster Innovation Centre (CIC) is launching a new project called “The Third ‘I': Dignity of being” under which the designated team will work on a policy to make university's environment more transgender-friendly.
The team will look into the problems related to transgenders like the hostel accommodation, separate washrooms, healthcare facilities, separate TG cells, and anti-harassment.
Last year, when the University opened its admissions for transgenders, out of 90,000 applications, nine candidates chose the transgender option.
