Canacona: Nineteen workers have died and 30 to 35 workers are feared trapped in the rubble as an under construction multi-storied building collapsed like a pack of cards on Saturday evening.

More than 200 army jawans are still working to rescue the trapped workers.

A team of National Disaster Response Force has been rushed from Pune.

Goa Police have registered a case against the builder for negligence and culpable homicide.

The construction manager of Ruby Galaxy company, the labour contractor and site supervisor have been arrested by police.

Sources said, a builder from Delhi and another from Goa were joint partners in the construction company.

Lt Col Amrish Kumar, leading the rescue operation for the army unit, said more than 150 jawans worked the whole night and so far 17 workers have been rescued alive.

Eleven bodies have been recovered so far, while two bodies have been noticed lying under the rubble.

The army officer said, 12 to 14 workers are still trapped under the rubble.

Canacona is 80 km from Panaji in South Goa.

Rescue teams on Sunday continued to rummage through the debris of the collapsed  under-construction five-storeyed building, which collapsed Saturday afternoon.

The building is a part of a partially completed residential complex where actress Asha Parekh, sports minister and local MLA Ramesh Tawadkar own flats.

A portion of the building, Ruby Residency, located in the Chawdi ward of Canacona, collapsed burying labourers working at the site.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar who was monitoring the rescue operations until late Saturday said: "An FIR has been filed against the builder, contractor and the municipal engineer in-charge. We will not spare anyone."

The construction was being carried out by a Navi Mumbai-based real estate development firm, Bharat Developers and Realtors Pvt. Ltd.
