New Delhi: The Kashmir issue has been a festering sore since the partition of India in 1947.

Soon after independence, Pakistani tribals invaded Jammu and Kashmir, then a princely state under Maharaja Hari Singh, in 1948.

The maharaja fled to India after signing the Instrument of Accession.

Pakistani army invaded large parts of original Jammu and Kashmir, and gave away some of the territories to China.

After the invasion by Pakistan, India took the matter to the United Nations, and the UN appointed a UN Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).

A Line of Control divides Jammu and Kashmir and Pak Occupied Kashmir, with parts of the boundary in Jammu known as international border.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars, in 1948, in 1965 and in 1971, and also a conflict in Kargil in 1999.
