New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted the citizens of Afghanistan on the occasion of country's 95th Independence Day.

The Prime Minister wished for progress and prosperity of the friendly people of Afghanistan.

Modi also took the opportunity to describe Afghanistan a close friend of India saying ‘India attaches the highest importance to further strengthening its strategic partnership with Afghanistan'.

“India will continue to extend its full support to the government and people of Afghanistan in their efforts to build a strong, peaceful, united, democratic and prosperous Afghanistan,” Modi said in a message to Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai.

The Afghan Independence Day is celebrated to commemorate the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of August 19, 1919 that ended Britain's control over Afghanistan's foreign affairs. Britain fought three wars with Afghanistan in 19th and 20th centuries, but could not include Afghanistan in its empire.
