CRPF on Friday recovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) planted on roads to target security forces from Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Official sources said one of the IEDs weighing 10 kg was recovered from West Midnapore district incidentally on the same road where Naxals killed five CRPF personnel in a blast on May 19.

The district has been a hotbed of Naxalite activities since the last couple of years and a joint CRPF-state police operation was launched in June last year to retake the areas controlled by Maoists there. Another IED weighing 40 kg was recovered in Bhelki village near a bridge in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand.

On May 19, five CRPF personnel, including a Deputy Commandant, were killed in an IED blast triggered by Naxalites in the West Midnapore district.

According to security officials, IED is the most potent weapon being used by Naxals in inflicting heavy damage to security forces. The most recent deadly example of IED was on May 17 when Naxals blew up a civilian bus in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh killing at least 35 people.

In the last five months, Naxals have undertaken a series of deadly attacks against security forces, killing more than 100 personnel with the CRPF bearing the maximum brunt. PTI
