Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Friday night sent out a stern warning to Air India unions which have threatened to go on strike from June 12 warning them that indiscipline and irresponsible action will not be tolerated.

"Government is fully behind the Air India management," he said adding it has been made clear that illegal and irresponsible action should not be tolerated.

"I think the results are there. I am not trying to say anything about the proposed actions which unions may be contemplating. I don't think such a situation will ever arise and wiser counsel will prevail," Patel told a news channel.

Taking a tough stand, Air India had sacked 58 employees and suspended 15 engineers for going on a flash strike on Tuesday affecting the airline operations. The strike, which lasted 33-hours, was called off on Wednesday after the Delhi High Court directed the striking unions to return to work.

The Minister said, "no indiscipline should be tolerated" and this has been conveyed to AI management.

He said after the Mangalore tragedy, the entire Air India family should have stood united and tried to resurrect their company and the brand.

The Minister emphasised that in this age of competition, AI will need to shape up and offer the best services.

"It has a lot of soul searching and introspection to do and rise to the occasion," he said. PTI
