Quake in Afghanistan, tremors hit north India

New Delhi: Tremors were felt across north India on Saturday as a moderate intensity earthquake hit Afghanistan, the authorities said.

The earthquake originated in the Hind Kush mountains, near Jarm in Afghanistan, at 2.07 p.m.

The India Meteorological Department said the quake measured 5.8 on the Richter scale, while the United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the intensity of the earthquake at 5.3.

"The magnitude of the tremor was 5.8 on the Richter scale with epicentre in the Hindu Khush mountain range of Afghanistan. Depth of the shock was 170 km inside the Earth," Sonam Lotus, a Met department official said.

The earthquake jolted the Kashmir Valley. People ran out of their offices and houses.

No report of any casualty or damage to property has come so far from anywhere, an official of the provincial administration said.
