Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accompanied by French President Emmanuel Macron, paid homage to the Arc de Triomphe war memorial here on Saturday.

"President @EmmanuelMacron and I laid a wreath at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris," Modi tweeted soon after.

Built between 1806 and 1836, the Arc de Triomphe stands at the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as "Place del'Etoile, and is in honour of all those who fought for France.

Prior to the visit to the memorial, in a joint address to the media, Modi said that many Indian soldiers had laid down their lives in World Wars I and II and he would be paying homage to them.

On his part, Macron said: "Many Indian soldiers died for our country, for its freedom and it is evidence of strong bonds between our countries."

Modi arrived here on Friday on the fourth and final leg of a six-day, four-nation tour of Europe.
