New Delhi: Facebook users across the globe were stuck with a blank screen and an apology while logging on to the social networking site.

There was no explanation given as to the reason why the social networking site not working.

This is the first time Facebook has suffered a widespread outage which has lasted for more than a few minutes.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder and chief executive was famously quoted as saying that the social network would never go down, it would never crash.

On logging in to Facebook.com, a message appeared that read: "Sorry, something went wrong. We are working on getting this fixed as soon as we can."

There was a "Go Back" button underneath this message that redirects users to the log in page, but when you try to log in again it shows the same message.

The problem was not limited to the web app, even the Facebook app for Android was unable to load news feed.

If tweets are an indicator, this Facebook outage appeared to have impacted many countries globally.

The outage prevented users accessing the social network leading many to decamp to other services like Google+ and Twitter.

There's no other word from Facebook on the reason behind the downtime.
