New York:  A large fire under a Manhattan bridge sent orange flames and plumes of smoke over several New York City blocks. The blaze shut down service on the nation's second busiest commuter rail service, creating a travel nightmare for dozens.

"I'm not really happy because I don't like Mondays in general so this is really doing it," said an aggrieved commuter. The fire started around noon and it took crews more than 2 hours to get the flames under control.

Metro-North train service resumed ahead of the evening rush hour but that provided little comfort for some rail passengers.

" Penn Station last week. Grand Central this week. Path trains next week, I don't know. People do have to get home. This place is going to be insane...I've got to get out of here," protested another. This is just the latest in a string of problems for suburban New York commuters.

Last week, a storm left downed trees on the tracks bringing Long Island Rail trains to a halt. And in August a fire damaged a switching system causing a week of service disruptions. The cause of Monday's fire was not immediately known. No injuries were reported.AP
