New Delhi: Days after he stoked controversy over his remark on reservation policy, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Sunday said that its chief Mohan Bhagwat believes the existing quota policy is necessary for the sake of social justice.

"The RSS thinks that the facility of reservation should be for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, extremely backward classes and other backward classes in a manner that is suitable for them so that the aim of Constitution makers is fulfilled," The RSS's Bihar-Jharkhand regional head Mohan Singh said.

Singh's remark came within hours of BJP MP from Patna Saheb, Shatrughan Sinha, endorsed Bhagwat's stand on the issue.

"Sri Mohan Bhagwat's views on review of reservations should be taken seriously. We hold the views of the RSS supremo in high esteem," he had tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP had in past 'categorically' distanced itself from its ideological mentor saying BJP did not support reconsidering reservation policy.

Amid the continuing Patel quota stir in Gujarat, Bhagwat had pitched for a review of the reservation policy, contending it has been used for political ends and suggesting setting up of an apolitical committee to examine who needs the facility and for how long.
