Soren Demands CIL Headquarters In Jharkhand
Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren on Monday urged the Centre to shift the headquarters of Coal India Limited (CIL) from Kolkata to his state, an official release in Ranchi said.
"As Jharkhand has 40 per cent of the country's coal reserves, the headquarters of CIL should be shifted to Jharkhand," Soren told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during their meeting in New Delhi today.
To buttress his claim, Soren drew the attention of the prime minister that Bharat Coking Coal Limited and Central Coalfields Limited, the two subsidiaries of CIL, are located in the state.
Calling on Singh as the head of a high-level delegation, Soren claimed that Jharkhand was not getting the desired benefits as CIL headquarters is situated outside the state.
Soren's demand for shift of CIL headquarters from Kolkata to Jharkhand assumes significance in the wake of Congress leader and Jharkhand Opposition Leader Rajendra Prasad Singh demanding the state government to take steps to shift CIL headquarters to Ranchi.
Singh's demand came in the recently concluded assembly session and Deputy Chief Minister Sudesh Mahto seeking support of the Opposition as Congress was in power at the Centre. PTI
