BJP president Nitin Gadkari on Saturday  said wrong economic policies of the UPA government are responsible for price rise and growing poverty in the country.

"The government lacked the political will to arrest price rise and are following policies which resulted in steep rise in price of commodities, especially food items," Gadkari said at a public rally in Shimla.

He said the government is exporting sugar at Rs 12.50 per kg when the price of sugar in domestic market is Rs 38 per kg. The country is also importing sugar from Brazil at Rs 25 to Rs 35 per kg, he said.

Gadkari alleged that the UPA government has meted out step-motherly attitude towards BJP-led government in Himachal Pradesh by withdrawing industrial package to the state.

Defending the BJP's decision to form a government in Jharkhand with the support of JMM, he said it was necessary to keep the Congress at bay. PTI
