Mithali Raj's girls nearly had their fingers on the trophy till they let it slip away with England being crowned the ICC Women's World Cup winners. Despite the fact that they lost in the final, India women's team won hearts with their superb show in the tournament.
Mithali Raj, who is named as the captain of the ICC Women's World Cup team, has surely led by example for all the Indian youngsters. The 35-year-old will now receive a BMW from the former chief selector of the junior cricket team, V Chamundeswaranath. The chief selector has provided many sports cars with luxurious cars in the past. Chamundeswaranath had gifted a Chevrolet sedan back in 2007 to Mithali Raj and feels that the skipper should be rewarded in a bigger stature with a BMW this time around.
"Our girls are performing quite well. We need to encourage women's cricket in a big way. I think with their brilliant show in England they have brought a lot of attention to the women's game. More girls will be inspired to take up cricket now," Chamundi told The Times of India.
"Mithali has been a great influence on Indian cricket. The way she has led the side is remarkable. For a number of years she has been the leading light of the Indian women's cricket," Chamundi said, adding that women's cricket needs a lot of encouragement.
Following the Rio Olympics last year, Chamundeswaranath gave away BMW cars to Silver medallist PV Sindhu, Bronze medal winning wrestler Sakshi Mallik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar and badminton coach Pullela Gopichand. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar presented the cars to the athletes at a small function held in Hyderabad.
Badminton aces Saina Nehwal, Parupalli Kashyap and a few other shuttlers were also honored with luxurious cars.
