London: England strolled to a 4-0 win over Bulgaria on Friday (3rd September) in a Group G European Championship qualifier at Wembley.  Jermain Defoe collected a hat-trick whilst Adam Johnson added another, as England outclassed their Eastern European opponents at the start of the qualifying campaign.

The abject failure in the World Cup had led to widespread disillusionment amongst the English fans, but Wembley once again was near capacity as Fabio Capello's men looked to put the disappointment of the summer behind them as they took on Bulgaria in the opening Group G European Championship qualifier.

Bulgaria are some way short of the team who captured the world's imagination during the USA World Cup in 1994, and England went ahead just three minutes in.

Wayne Rooney chipped the ball forward to Chelsea's Ashley Cole, and at the second attempt he found the waiting Jermain Defoe - and the Tottenham Hotspur striker made no mistake.

Bulgaria were growing into the contest and forced England 'keeper Joe Hart into a save, but from the resulting break Rooney picked out Defoe - and he made it 2-0.

It was simply a question of how many England were going to get as the fight fell out of Bulgaria, and another duly arrived.

Defoe picked Rooney who in turn picked out Adam Johnson, and the young winger drilled in a low shot to make it 3-0.  England were far from from finished.

Rooney - who had a hand in every goal - picked out Defoe with a perfectly-weighted ball, and the forward showed an excellent turn of pace to beat his man and fired in the fourth for his hat-trick - injuring himself in the process.  That will cause concern for Spurs fans, but England fans were in dreamland as the road to redemption started with real promise.

England meets Switzerland on Tuesday.
