Brussels: Germany opened their Euro 2012 campaign with a 1-0 away victory over Belgium on Friday (September 3).  Miroslav Klose scored the only goal - his 53rd goal for his country - in the 51st minute.

Fresh from their heroics at the World Cup, much was expected of the Germans when they took to the field in their opening qualifier for the 2012 European Championship in Brussels on Friday (September 3).

Joachim Loew's men eventually delivered - but they were given the odd scare by a Belgian side that has not been a force in the continent for many years now.

What turned out to be the only goal of the game arrived in the 51st minute.  Arch-poacher Miroslav Klose was the man who grabbed it - the striker reproducing the deadly form in the penalty area that he showed repeatedly in South Africa.

Thomas Mueller came close to extending that lead in the 70th minute - Logan Bailly coming to the hosts' rescue.  And in the 88th minute, Klose almost doubled the German advantage. As it transpired, that miss would not prove fatal - Germany holding onto that slim advantage and returning home 1-0 victors.

Belgium: Logan Bailly; Toby Alderweireld, Daniel Van Buyten, Vincent Kompany, Thomas Vermaelen; Marouane Fellaini, Timmy Simons (Jelle Vossen, 83), Jan Vertonghen; Moussa Dembele, Romelu Lukaku (Christian Benteke, 73), Eden Hazard (Olivier Deschacht, 73).

Germany: Manuel Neuer; Philipp Lahm, Per Mertesacker, Holger Badstuber, Marcell Jansen (Heiko Westermann, 46); Sami Khedira, Bastian Schweinsteiger; Thomas Mueller, Mesut Oezil (Cacau, 88), Lukas Podolski (Toni Kroos, 70), Miroslav Klose.  AP
