Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday said that there are no plans to introduce new series of Rs 1,000 notes.

"No plans to introduce Rs 1,000 notes. Focus is on production and supply of Rs 500 and lower denomination notes," tweeted Das today, putting an end to speculations on the issue.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Centre and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) were planning to come up with a new plan to launch new series of Rs 1,000 notes.

A report in a leading daily had claimed that the RBI has already started printing new Rs 1,000 notes.

Quoting a “senior government official”, the daily had said that the central bank had originally planned to pump new Rs 1,000 notes into the economy in January but it was delayed due to the need to supply Rs 500 notes.

Das also addressed the issue of the prevailing condition of cash shortage at ATMs, even three months after the demonetisation drive.

"Complaints of cash (being) out in ATMs (are) being addressed. Request everyone to draw the cash they actually require. Overdrawal by some deprives others," Das tweeted.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the supply of currency to ATMs has risen 80-85 per cent from pre-note ban levels, but the fear of not having enough liquid cash is driving people to hoard it.
