New Delhi: Google has slashed the monthly cost of extra storage for Google Drive.

Each time you open a GMail account, you get 15GB free storage option that includes the size of your attachments and your files in Google Drive. Beyond the free 15GB, users had to pay to get more storage from Google. But now you can jump up to 100GB for $1.99, down from the previous price of $4.99. Perhaps the best option is the 1TB tier, which has fallen from $49.99 each month all the way down to $9.99.

Any storage you buy for Google Drive also goes towards other Google services including Gmail and Google+ Photos.

Google Drive users already signed up for previous plans will automatically be moved to a similar new plan at no additional cost, according to the company.

Among Google Drive's competitors is Microsoft's OneDrive and Apple's iCloud, but the companies most threatened by Google's move into online storage two years ago are smaller specialized service providers, such as DropBox, Box, SugarSync and YouSendIt.

The huge slash in price is likely to gain a lot of popularity among users and Google expects them to flock to Google Drive.
