Superstar Salman Khan has topped the list of Indian celebrities released by Forbes with earnings of Rs 270.33 crore. His contemporary and close friend Shah Rukh Khan was nestled at the second position with an earning of Rs 221.75 crore. The third Khan - Aamir – failed to make it to the top 10 list of Indian celebrities.
The magazine ranks celebrities on two parameters - entertainment related earnings and estimates of fame. The period under consideration for the list was from October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016.
Given the period which played a role in deciding the list, Aamir not being on the top 10 isn’t surprising. Bollywood’s ‘Mr. Perfectionist’ did not have any release during the period nor has he been seen on the small screen hosting or judging shows.
Salman, on the other hand, has two blockbusters under his belt during the period - ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ and ‘Sultan’. He is also hosting the tenth season of the reality show ‘Bigg Boss’ which has also contributed to his stardom.
Salman’s earnings account for 9.84 per cent of the Rs 2,745 crore in earnings that the top 10 personalities make. This itself is a testimony to the stardom he enjoys.
Shah Rukh Khan, on the other hand, also featured in two films during the said period - ‘Dilwale’ and ‘Fan’. Though both the movies weren’t as successful, but SRK amanged to hold on to his stardom.
The surprise package in the list was India’s star cricketer Virat Kohli who surpassed Salman and SRK to top the fame rank and made it to the third spot in the list with earnings of Rs 134.44 crore.

On number 4 of the list was Akshay Kumar (who gave three superhit movies in 2016 itself) with an earnings of Rs 203.03 crore. Khiladi Kumar was ranked 11 in terms of fame.
Indian cricketer and limited overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was nestled at no. 5 as he earned Rs 122.48 crore but was ranked fourth on the fame scale.
Deepika Padukone made it to the sixth position (with earnings of Rs 69.75) while her contemporary Priyanka Chopra was ranked eighth with an earning Rs 76 crore. Despite earning less than Priyanka, Deepika surged ahead in the list because of her fame ranking. Bollywood’s Mastani was ranked 8th on fame scale while the Desi Girl was listed at 9.
On number seven was ‘God of Cricket’ Sachin Tendulkar with an earning of Rs 58 crore (fame rank 6). Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was on number 9, earning Rs 32.62 crore and fame rank five. Hrithik Roshan made it to the tenth position by minting Rs 90.25 core and coming 12th on the fame rank.
