Jaipur, Apr 27: Bollywood singer Kumar Sanu says talent hunts are only a way of making money and they do not produce creative singers who can survive in the industry.

The 54-year-old singer, who has sung in films like “1942: A Love Story”, “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Pardes”, said most of these contest winners cannot make a place for themselves in the industry.

“The participants just copy other singers and sing their songs to win a particular programme. But after they win competitions, most of them are not seen anywhere in the industry,” he told reporters here.

“Reason behind this phenomenon is that in these business oriented talent shows, participants just follow other singers and do not create and show their own work.

“For some time it is okay, but it does not work if you continue to copy and do not create your own work and go ahead with that,” he said.

“To succeed, one should have creativity. In the last two decades, we can see only a couple of singers who could survive but others vanished from the industry,” Sanu added.

The singer, who was in the city to inaugurate ‘Talent Studioz', said that he is now back in active singing after a lull of 4-5 years.

“For the last 4-5 years, the songs were not my type and I did not want to sing beyond my style so I preferred to stay away. Now I am back again,” he said.

Talking about the popular songs these days, Sanu said, “Those who come with songs like ‘Beedi Jalaile', ‘Sheela Ki Jawani', ‘Jalebi Bai' and ‘Anarkali', claim that teenagers like such songs but the fact is quite different.

“Such songs do not last long and does not stand anywhere if compared to old songs of legends like Kishore Kumar.” He said that he would quit singing if teenagers say they liked such songs over everygreen songs.

“Channels should also evaluate what they telecast and what is the level of the stuff they present before the young generation,” he said.

Sanu also said that the decision to nominate cricket player Sachin Tendulkar and actress Rekha was welcoming and it should not be linked with politics.
