New Delhi: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan's last release ‘Dilwale' did not turn out to be one of the biggest hits of his career. It was expected that the movie will create new benchmarks and break previous records at the box office. Sadly, the film's domestic collections didn't come true to its expectations.
To compensate the loss, Red Chillies head honcho Shah Rukh has decided to repay 50 per cent of the loss to the distributors, suggest media reports. Red Chillies had turned distributor for the first time for this Rohit Shetty directorial. The film was jointly produced by Red Chillies and Rohit Shetty Productions.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta tweeted the development, saying that “few do what SRK has done”.
The marketing mastermind that SRK himself has accepted he is, did all he could to get better reception at the box office. However, his ‘intolerance' remark did him more harm than he would have anticipated. In many parts of India, the movie was boycotted.
Shah Rukh himself admitted this during a press conference by saying, “I don't think the film has done as well as it should have. I am personally disappointed with that.” It wouldn't be wrong to say that a poor script and bad reviews too contributed towards ‘Dilwale's' debacle.
In contrast to the Indian box office, ‘Dilwale' performed really well aboard. Minting close to Rs 192 crore overseas, it has become SRK's highest grosser outside India. Its lifetime collection in India is of Rs 148 crore, far away from what was expected.
The distributors were obviously upset with such a performance. Even the magical pair of Shah Rukh and Kajol couldn't make up form their losses.
With Shah Rukh's ‘Raees' and ‘Fan' releasing this year, we hope the distributors don't get disappointed again.
