Vampire film New Moon, a sequel to Twilight, has smashed the record for box office takings in the US after it made £44m in its first 24 hours of opening, reports The Daily Telegraph, London.

The film beat the previous record of Batman: The Dark Knight which made £40m in its first 24 hours.

Since the vampire film opened in the UK and US on Friday, it has made £84m in the US.

The sales figures for the UK are not yet available but by Thursday, before it had even been released, the film had already taken more than £1 million in ticket sales making it the fastest advance-selling film of the year.

In the US, more film fans pre-booked tickets for the film than ordered advance seats for Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince or The Dark Knight, according to Fandango, the cinema booking website.

The film, which cost just £30m to make, details a love affair between 17-year-old schoolgirl Bella Swan, played by Kirsten Stewart, and an 109-year-old "vegetarian" vampire Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson.

Its success has been largely attributed to the charms of Pattinson, who was largely unknown a year ago but is now mobbed by teenage girls wherever he goes.

During a promotional event at Battersea Power Station in central London, the 23-year-old actor, from Barnes, southwest London, was greeted by thousands of fans.
