Pakistan Army again violates ceasefire along LoC, India retaliates

A day after two civilians were killed in ceasefire violations in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, Pakistan Army on Sunday again indulged in heavy firing along the Line of Control (LoC), prompting the Indian Army to retaliate. 

"Our forces are effectively retaliating. The firing is presently ongoing," an Army spokesperson said. 

The ceasefire violation was reported from Chiti Bakri in Chingus area and Manjakote in Rajouri. 

"Pakistan Army initiated indiscriminate firing of small arms, automatics, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars along the LoC in Rajouri," Army said, adding that it was retaliating appropriately anf firing was on. 

It is the fourth incident of ceasefire violation by Pakistan since May 10 and so far three persons have died and six have been injured. 

Yesterday, two civilians were killed and three injured in heavy shelling by Pakistan in Rajouri district.

Around 1,000 persons have been evacuated from areas along the LoC hit by shelling. 

Schools along the LoC in Rajouri were shut for an indefinite period as a precautionary measure and around 1,000 residents of border villages have been evacuated.

The government had last month said that Pakistani security forces had violated the ceasefire 268 times in the last one year. Nine perons were killed in these incidents. 

Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre had said some time back that between April 2016 and March 2017, the maximum of 88 violations were witnessed in November 2016 followed by 78 in October 2016 and 22 in March this year. 

The ceasefire between India and Pakistan came into force in November 2003.
