New Delhi: The Railways have announced a steep 40 per cent hike in food rates on Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express and Duronto Express with effect from October 17.

In AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier and AC Chair, the rate of morning tea has been hiked from Rs 8 to Rs 10, breakfast from Rs 66.50 to Rs 75, Lunch from Rs 112 to Rs 125, Evening tea and snacks from Rs 37 to Rs 45, and dinner from Rs 112 to Rs 125.

In Duronto sleeper coaches, the rate of morning tea has been hiked from Rs 6.50 to Rs 10, breakfast from Rs 34 to Rs 40, Lunch from Rs 71 to Rs 80, Evening tea and snacks from Rs 18 to Rs 20, and dinner from Rs 71 to Rs 80.

The food prices are included in the train fares of Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto Express.

On October 7, the Railways had hiked passenger fares by 2 percent, and this hike is an additional shocker.

Railway Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge says, the hike has been made in order to provide quality and branded food to passengers.

He said, there had been no hike in food prices in Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto  since 1999, and prices of food items have skyrocketted since then.
