Srinagar: A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of Army was killed today in cross-LoC firing by Pakistani troops in Kupwara district of Kashmir.
The JCO was hit by a Pakistani sniper near the LoC in Nowgam sector and later succumbed to injuries, an army spokesman said here.
He said Pakistan troops resorted to firing on forward positions in the sector around 1300 hours, violating the ceasefire once again.
The spokesman said the identity of the slain JCO, and other details of the incident will follow in due course.
There have been 52 incidents of ceasefire violations by Pakistan in August so far. So far this year, Pakistan violated the ceasefire over 245 times.
The latest incident came two days after Pakistan called off the National Security Advisor level talks with India scheduled on 23-24 August. Issue related to terrorism were to be discussed in the talks as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif agreed in Ufa, Russia.
India reacted sharply to the invitation sent to Kashmiri separatist to meet Pakistan NSA Sartaj Aziz before the scheduled meeting. Pakistan cancelled the talks saying it can not hold dialogue if there are pre-conditions.
