New Delhi, Jul 23 : The CISF today conducted a major drive against women pick pocketers and suspects in the Delhi Metro network and apprehended 21 people from various stations.
A squad of female intelligence officials of the force today boarded the Metro in civil clothes from various stations in the national capital region and travelled as usual commuters to check and spot suspect women.
After the day-long operation, the CISF nabbed five women each from Barakhamba and Ram Krishna Ashram Marg stations, seven from Rajiv Chowk and four women from Central Secretariat for attempts to pickpocket and theft from women passengers, especially in the exclusive female compartments.
“These women will be handed over to various police stations of the Delhi Metro,” CISF spokesperson and Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Rohit Katiyar said.
Katiyar said that the force had received a number of complaints from female passengers in the past about suspect women travellers and the operation was undertaken keeping in mind this aspect.
Most of the apprehended women hail from the slums in the national capital and are in the age group of 18-35 years.
A number of them told that they have come here from Maharashtra and Gujarat, a senior official involved in the operation said.
A number of them had children with them in tow which was an attempt to disguise as normal passengers. By taking the help of these kids, these women diverted the attention of passengers and secretly stole their purses and other valuables, the officer said.
Out of these 21 women, fourteen have earlier been apprehended by the CISF or Metro security staff earlier for similar theft attempts.
The female Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials were also armed with the photos of some of the suspects which were captured by the CCTV in the Metro network. PTI
