Shimla, Aug 11: Former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal yesterday accused the Congress government of "promoting mining mafia" by not effectively checking illegal activity in the state.

"The people of the state were fed up with the working of the state government because it has miserably failed to check corruption, inflation, price rise and showing political will to rein in the mining mafia," Dhumal, the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, said while addressing party workers at Hamirpur.

He alleged that the BJP supporters and sympathisers were being harassed and government employees were being posted to far-flung and remote areas as a "punishment".

"Even the payments of contractors have been held up on political grounds and payments to the contractors having affiliation with BJP were not being released," Dhumal said.

Ruing over the people of the Hamirpur town not getting clean portable water, he said that the previous government had released Rs 25 crore for the purpose but the ruling Congress government has not started the work so far.
