Kalyani, West Bengal, Apr 15: The ailing mother of rights activist Binayak Sen today said her confidence in the country's judicial system had been restored after her son was granted bail by the Supreme Court in a case of sedition.

"I was demoralised when the Chhattisgarh High Court refused bail to my son and I thought I may not be able to meet my son. I got back my faith in the judicial system," Anasuya Sen said from her home in this town in Nadia district.

"Satyameva Jayete," she said adding the good news coincided with the Bengali New year today and she was extremely happy.

A bench of the apex court, comprising Justices H S Bedi and C K Prasad, today granted bail to Binayak sen who was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Chhattisgarh court on the charges of sedition and giving shelter to Naxalites.

In Delhi,  Home Minister P Chidambaram today expressed happiness over the Supreme Court decision.

"I am happy to know that Binayak Sen has got bail from the Supreme Court. I have always believed that if one is not satisfied with a lower court order, one can get reprieve by approaching a higher court," he told reporters.

Chidambaram had earlier said that the judgement may be unsatisfactory for many people but the only way to "correct" it was by filing an appeal.

Welcoming the Supreme Court decision,  the CPI today demanded that Chhattisgarh government withdraw all cases against the activist.

CPI National Secretary D Raja demanded that the BJP government in Chhattisgarh withdraw the cases "foisted" on Sen, who has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court there for sedition and helping Naxalites.

He claimed that a number of CPI leaders and cadres were in prison in the state and demanded their immediate release.

"The Home Minister must see that security forces do not go on a rampage against tribal people and he should be held responsible for whatever happens to the tribals in Chhattisgarh," Raja said. PTI
