Kolkata, June 19: The Calcutta High Court today directed the West Bengal government to submit an Action Taken Report by July four into the gangrape and murder of a college student at Barasat in North 24-Parganas district.

Hearing a PIL seeking the setting up of a special investigation team and monitoring of the probe by the high court, a division bench of Chief Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Joymalyo Bagchi directed the state to submit the ATR in the gruesome incident at Kamduni village in Barasat.

The bench had earlier directed the state government to file an affidavit within seven days stating what steps it had taken to bring the perpetrators of the crime to justice, but adjourned the date till July four on a prayer by the state government.

The matter would come up for hearing on July four, the court directed.

A compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the next of kin of the girl has also been prayed for.

The 20-year-old girl, daughter of a daily wage-earner, was returning home after a university examination on June eight when a group of hooligans dragged her inside a walled premises, raped her by turns and killing her. They then dumped the body on the wayside.

Three persons, including the caretaker of the premises, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
