Srinagar: Hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani today appealed to German Ambassador to India Michael Steiner to reconsider holding a cultural programme in Kashmir next month.

“Any sort of activity related with politics, diplomatic, culture or sports will have adverse effect over the disputed nature of Jammu and Kashmir,” Geelani said in his appeal to Steiner.

German Embassy is planning to hold a cultural programme here on September 7 which will feature performance by renowned International conductor Zubin Mehta.

Geelani said holding such programmes can lead to sidelining of incidents of Human Rights violations in the state.

“We, therefore, wish that Germany will play a responsible role and stay away from any such move that may effect the noble cause of people of Kashmir,” he said.

On Thursday, Steiner had said he had spoken with a number of people, including the hardliners, and was hopeful that the concert would be a success not only for them but also for the Kashmiri people.

The hardline Hurriyat leader said people of Kashmir opposed holding of international cricket match between West Indies and India in 1983.
