New Delhi: Concerned over lack of public enthusiasm surrounding the Commonwealth Games, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday  appealed to citizens to celebrate the event as a "national festival" and sought their active cooperation in making it a great success.

"I must assure you that there will be a festive fervour during the Games in Delhi. It is for all the citizens to be part of this national festival," Dikshit said addressing representatives of various RWAs across the city.

The Chief Minister also appealed to the citizens to spruce up their localities so that a "clean and beautiful Delhi" could be presented during the event.

Asking the people to welcome visitors with "nice gesture" and "decent behaviour", she said it was duty of every citizen to ensure that the tourists go back home carrying a good image of the city.

Expressing confidence about hosting the Games successfully, she said the government was leaving no stone unturned to spruce up the city ahead of the mega event.

She requested the RWA representatives to bring to the notice of agencies concerned about the any pothole or unfinished work so that necessary repairs could be ensured immediately.

Noting that Ram Leela celebrations will coincide with the Games, she hoped the city will be able to present its "composite culture" during the event.

She said the government has also decided to illuminate 47 historical buildings in the city.

Dikshit requested representatives of RWAs to concentrate on cleanliness. She said RWAs can play a big role in ensuring that people do not urinate or throw litter in public places. PTI
