Nay Pyi Taw: Myanmar yesterday assured India that it will not allow its soil to be used for any activity inimical to Indian interests.

This assurance was given to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by Myanmar President U Thein Sein during a bilateral meeting on the eve of the 3rd BIMSTEC Summit here.

President Thein Sein assured Prime Minister Singh that their soil would be allowed to be used for any activity inimical to India's interests, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told reporters.

Khurshid was responding to a question on reports of insurgent groups operating from this country for anti-India activities.

Both sides share information on this issue, he said Senior officials said Singh underlined the importance India attached to its bilateral ties with Myanmar and the need for further consolidating cooperation in energy and other areas to substantially increase the volume of trade from the present level of USD two billion.

Prime Minister Singh yesterday arrived here on a two-day visit for the Summit of the seven-nation grouping Bay Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

BIMSTEC is an expression of India's Look East Policy of the 1990s, coinciding with Thailand's Look West Policy.
