Mumbai can now boast of an airport on par with the best in the world, from gardens and fountains to multilevel car parks.
Seven years after the first decision was taken to rebuild Mumbai's congested Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the state of the art Terminal 2 today.
The cost of the T2 terminal at the time of proposal was Rs 7,452 crore, but it has now escalated to Rs 9,800 crore.
It is a four storied mega structure that offers 37 travelators, 48 escalators and 72 elevators aid those who fret over rushing to take connecting flights. T2 in fact has India's tallest airport escalator that stands at 11.6 m.
It will cater to an estimated 40 million passengers annually.
A multi level car park has also been built to accommodate 5,000 vehicles. T2 will mostly cater to international traffic, though a few domestic airlines are expected to move operations there later.
