Observing Muharram: Pictures of the procession from around the world
‘Muharram’ observed on the first month of Islamic calendar, great religious significance to Islamic people. It is seen as the day of mourning with various processions on streets. Muharram has been derived from the word ‘haram’ meaning forbidden. According to Islamic belief, the grand son of Prophet Muhammad, Imam Husayn Ibn Ali aka Imam Hussain Ali was killed on this day. He was the third Imam of the Shia community. Many Shia Muslims whip themselves with sharp objects on their back, head and chest. Sunni Muslims observe it differently.
