The BJP-sponsored bandh to protest bus fare hike and "skyrocketing prices" of essential commodities evoked partial response on Friday as schools, government offices, banks and other institutions in the city functioned normally while some markets remained closed.

There was no traffic disruption as metro, bus and private vehicles plied normally across the capital. However, the BJP claimed that the bandh was "totally successful" and people from all sections supported it.

Delhi BJP chief Om Prakash Kohli "thanked" the people, "specially the traders, shopkeepers, workers and the students for giving full support to the bandh."

Earlier in the day, braving chilly weather, BJP workers led by their leaders staged demonstrations in various parts of the capital, holding placards and raising slogans against the city government for "failing" to curb inflation and increasing bus and metro fares.

Markets in BJP dominated areas such as Greater Kailash, Vikas Marg, Karol Bagh, Lakshmi Nagar and Chandni Chowk were closed as BJP workers carried out protest rallies amid tight security deployed by the Delhi police to avoid any untoward incident.

"I had to buy sweets and other materials for a function in my house. I could not buy it as all the shops are closed here," said Nirmal Kumar, a resident of Karol Bagh.

Police said the bandh was peaceful as no incidents of violence was reported from anywhere in the city. PTI
