New Delhi: The Crime Branch of Delhi Police is now probing if farmer Gajendra Singh was provoked to climb the tree and whether he fell accidentally after tying the 'gamcha' to his neck.
Police yesterday registered an FIR invoking the charges of abetment (306 IPC) and causing death due to accident (304A). The section related to obstructing policemen and public servants (186 IPC) has also been incorporated in the FIR.
Meanwhile, the role of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has also come under scanner.
Family of Gajendra Singh Kalyanwat, who committed suicide at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rally yesterday, claimed that he was close to Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia and the latter had invited him for the rally in the national capital.
Jayveer Singh, a relative of deceased famer, said that Manish Sisodia had called Gajendra several times and asked him to come to Delhi to make the rally a success.
"They (AAP) didn't stop their program. No one has called us so far... but to invite him for the rally, they made several calls. He was close to Manish Sisodia of Aam Aadmi Party. He had called him and asked to attend the rally. He had assured him of all support. He had also said that if Gajendra comes for rally, it would help other farmers," he said.
"This a matter of shame... a man was hanging at the rally venue and people were busy in doing politics. If such incident happens here (village), people will leave their work and rush to save the person. But at that place (Delhi), no one tried to save him," he added.
The 43-year-old farmer, father-of-three, was politically ambitious. He had unsuccessfully contested 2008 and 2013 Rajasthan assembly elections as a Samajwadi Party candidate. After that, he wanted to join AAP.
Gajendra was owner of some 10 acres of land, including a gooseberry orchard and a teak plantation.
Gajendra's nephew, Amit Singh Kalyanwat, said that he left the village 3-4 days back saying he was going to try to meet Arvind Kejriwal.
Victim's uncle said that AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is to be solely blamed for Gajendra's death. "AP chief Arvind Kejriwal, who is also a CM, would have stopped the program and listened to him. He would sent his workers to bring him down from the tree."
The Dausa district administration said that loss of crop does not appear to be the only reason. "Loss to crops does not appear to be a reason of suicide. His family's financial condition is fine and they have farm houses and his uncle is the local village sarpanch," Dausa's Additional District Collector, Kailash Sharma said.
The women's wing of AAP painted Kejriwal posters with black and red paints and described him 'hatyara' (killer).
Gajendra, farmer from Dausa in Rajasthan, hanged himself in front of more than a thousand people at a kisan rally called by AAP to protest NDA government's Land Acquisition Bill at Jantar Mantar.
Special commissioner of police (law and order) Deepak Mishra has confirmed the registration of FIR.
He said that Joint Commissioner of New Delhi range, Mukesh Meena, has been appointed to inquire into the incident. The probe will also include role of police officers present at the incident site.
Police would also record statements of eyewitnesses if Gajendra was instigated to end his life. Police will probe the role of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) volunteers who stopped the officers at the spot from taking the victim in their ambulance.
According to police, the AAP had flouted rules by getting a gathering of more than 5,000 people. On Tuesday, New Delhi DCP Vijay Singh had written to AAP member Neeraj Kumar asking him to shift the venue of the protest to Ramlila Maidan in view of intelligence reports that their gathering was estimated to be around 20,000.
Police said that they had not granted permission to the AAP to hold rally at Jantar Mantar.
Meanwhile, family members of Gajendra said that Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia had invited him for the rally.
