As the role of past and present Congress governments comes under intense scrutiny for effectively helping Warren Anderson and America's Union Carbide get away in the Bhopal gas leak case, senior party leader Digvijaya Singh has said that American pressure could have been a factor in how the disaster was handled. Digvijaya Singh was a minister in the Arjun Singh Government in Madhya Pradesh when the Bhopal gas leak happened in 1984.

In a communication to a TV Channel Digvijaya Singh said, "I don't know as I was not in Bhopal at the time of gas leak. It could be under US pressure but I am not aware of the facts."

The biggest fallout of this week's verdict in the Bhopal gas tragedy case has been the refocusing of attention on Warren Anderson and the fact that he has not been tried for his role as the senior-most executive of the company that caused the world's biggest industrial disaster.

The Congress is now scrambling for face-saving measures. On Wednesday, it claimed that the government could still get Warren Anderson.
