Sri Lanka's World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga has blasted the country's selection panel, headed by another former captain Sanath Jayasuriya, after the team's embarrassing 3-0 whitewash in the recent Test series against India.

Sri Lanka cricketers have been drawing flak from all quarters following the humiliating defeat but Ranatunga said the Dinesh Chandimal-led side could not be held solely responsible for the drubbing.

"Sri Lanka cricket is going through the worst period," Ranatunga said. "You can't blame only the players, they are demoralised. It is the fault of the management," he added.

Ranatunga also called for the sacking of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) chief Thilanga Sumathipala and urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to investigate the board's management.

The 53-year-old had earlier said there was no "proper discipline" in the national side, which had suffered a string of home defeats in recent months, including an ODI series loss against minnows Zimbabwe.

"We don't have selectors with a backbone," Ranatunga said while referring to the panel headed by Jayasuriya.

Sri Lanka will now face Virat Kohli's men in the five match ODI series beginning Sunday. The two teams will also lock horns in a lone T20I to be played on September 6.
