India’s ace pistol shooter Jitu Rai scripted history at the Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi after on Wednesday by clinching the top position in the 50m men’s air pistol event, making it the first instance when India won a gold medal at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup. 

This gold is Jitu’s second medal in two days after he won the bronze medal in the 10m pistol event on Tuesday. 

Earlier this year, Jitu had won a silver in the 50m pistol event and a gold at the 10m air pistol event at the Maribor World Cup. 

Doing so, he won three medals in nine days at the World Cup to become the first person to win two medals at a single World Cup for India. 

The silver medal went to Amanpreet Singh. He grabbed the second position after shooting a total of 226.9. This was his first World Cup appearance.

In July 2014, Jitu was ranked number 1 in the world, in 10m air pistol, and number 4 in 50m pistol categories. 

He also won gold medals in the 50m category at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in the same year. His seven international medals in one year earned him the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2015.
